Florence Nightingale (1820–1910) was a British nurse, social reformer, and statistician who is widely regarded as the founder of modern nursing. She was born on May 12, 1820, in Florence, which is how she got her name. She became famous during the Crimean War, where she worked in military hospitals. At the time, conditions were extremely poor—dirty, overcrowded, and lacking proper medical care. Nightingale introduced strict hygiene practices, such as handwashing and sanitation, which significantly reduced the death rate among soldiers.
