British Gas has opened an account in my name for an address where I have never lived & sent me a bill for £571.
The company refused to open a complaint because I would not provide a tenancy agreement or mortgage statement. Since I paid off my mortgage years ago I do not have these documents. Now British Gas is threatening to send debt collectors after me. IW, Northampton

Your house gets its energy from Octopus and you have nothing to do with the flat down the street that British Gas has linked to your name.

British Gas took the position that if you cannot prove you do not live at that address then you must live there.
The company ignored the bank statements you sent as proof & never questioned whether the tracing agent it hired to find debtors was doing a proper job.

Since your address looks similar to the address of the flat with the unpaid bills the tracing agents decided you were the debtor when nobody responded to bills sent to the actual supply address.
British Gas only looked into the matter properly when I contacted them. The company has now apologized and removed your name from its records.
