Thousands of pensioners will begin repaying their Winter Fuel Payment this month with some facing deductions of up to £300.

HM Revenue and Customs has announced that anyone with an income exceeding £35000 must return their winter 2025 payment. This decision impacts approximately two million people throughout the UK.

The repayment process will happen automatically through the tax system for most recipients. Pensioners may notice their monthly income decreasing without taking any action themselves.

Those who pay tax through PAYE will have the amount recovered through tax code adjustments beginning in April 2026. Self-employed pensioners will see the charge included in their Self Assessment tax returns.

A typical £200 payment will be collected gradually at roughly £17 each month. Pensioners who received the higher £300 payment will experience a more substantial reduction in their income over the course of the year.

HMRC has emphasized that most people do not need to take any action to start the repayment process.

Myrtle Lloyd serves as chief customer officer at HMRC and explained that criminals are skilled at pretending to be official representatives. They often create fake letters & emails or make fraudulent calls & texts while claiming to be from HMRC. Their goal is to trick people into handing over money.

Lloyd encouraged anyone who feels uncertain about their situation to visit the online tool available at GOV.UK. This tool allows people to check whether they need to make a repayment and how the process will work. She pointed out that there is no need to call HMRC directly.

She also mentioned that the process works smoothly for most people because repayments are handled automatically through the existing system. The rules apply across the entire country.

This includes Scotland where the benefit goes by a different name called the Pension Age Winter Heating Payment. It also includes Northern Ireland. HMRC manages all repayments regardless of location.
